Six out of 10 cancer patients give holistic or alternative remedies a try. Now more people who simply want to feel better are doing the same too. Wellness centers are popping up in communities across the country.
“I was miserable. I never felt good. I didn’t have any energy. I didn’t want to get up,” said holistic care patient, Debbie Spangler.
She said she tried typical medical methods, but when that didn’t turn her health around, she decided to use homeopathic remedies.
The first step was finding the root of her problem. She met with naturopath Rachel Anzalone.
“This isn’t about alternative healthcare. This is supporting your body with what it needs on a day to day basis,” said Anzalone.
Spangler started with a five-day reset cleanse using shakes, bars and supplements to help flush toxins out of her body.
“Eating healthily, paying attention to what I put in my body and what it does to my body. I feel 1,000 times better,” said Spangler.
More than $10 billion were spent on complementary and alternative medicine research over the past 10 years.
Wholesome nutrition
As part of a holistically healthier lifestyle, the organic food market is booming. With people becoming increasingly concerned about the sheer scale of artificial interference in foods these days, global sales of organic products rose by 9.2 percent in 2010, climbing up to $59.1 billion from $54.1 billion in 2009, according to the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements.
There is clearly a growing desire to go back to a more wholesome way of living, which is why Wall Street insiders are tipping organics. According to a February 2012 article in the Wall Street Cheat Sheet:
“Entire supermarket chains, most notably Whole Foods Market Inc ( NASDAQ:WFM ), rely heavily on that ever-growing faction of Americans who actually care enough about their health to put down that Quarter Pounder in favor of a soy burger, or maybe a free-range turkey burger.”
So taking a more holistic and preventative approach to health seems to be in vogue.
“We’re not addressing specific health issues. It’s about creating overall health within the body,” said Anzalone.
