Ten natural ways to ease migraines

By tomasx of Natural News

Recommending natural remedies for migraine will never be an exact science. Even doctors aren’t too sure about what causes migraines. But for some people, natural remedies work better than anything a doctor could prescribe – and maybe one of these ten remedies could work for you, too. It has to be worth a try!

Prevention is better than cure

Our first five ‘remedies’ are actually preventative measures. Heck, if you can stop a migraine before you even get it that has to be first prize, right?

1. Cut down your alcohol intake or quit

If you tend to suffer from migraines within the first 8 hours after consuming alcohol, it could be worth skipping your sundowner.

2. Lose your caffeine addiction

Some of us are so addicted to caffeine that we suffer from headaches or even migraines when we don’t get enough of a ‘fix’ to make our bodies happy.

3. Don’t run on empty stomach

A sudden drop in your blood sugar level can bring on a migraine. Some experts say that migraine sufferers should nibble something every three to four hours.

4. Sleep well

That’s easier said than done for some of us, but going to bed at the same time every night and rising at the same time every morning can help you to sleep more deeply – and may help you to rid yourself of migraines.

5. Find your triggers

Keep a diary and note down simple facts such as what you ate and drank, how you slept and what your day was like. Try to determine whether any single factor acts as a trigger for your migraines, and adjust your lifestyle accordingly.

When the migraine strikes

You can feel it coming on, and you know you’re going to feel washed out for days afterwards. What can you do to relieve your discomfort?

6. Ice packs

Yup: cliché, cliché, cliché! But it really does work. Some people even recommend getting into a warm bath and putting an ice pack on your throbbing head.

7. Take your vitamin B complex

Specifically, you need riboflavin – or so a group of researchers say. In their trial, those who took 400mg of riboflavin daily suffered from fewer migraines than those who didn’t.

8. Massage, meditation and chilling out

Stress is a trigger for many migraine sufferers, so anything that helps you to relax could solve your problem.

9. Butterbur or feverfew

You have to be careful about using butterbur – it’s a fairly poisonous plant, so get capsules from your health shop rather than trying to grow your own. Feverfew is a bit gentler, and there is anecdotal evidence that it can reduce the frequency of migraines. Both of these herbs would be used a supplement rather than a symptomatic treatment.

10. Acupuncture

If you’re plagued by migraines, this has to be worth a try. There are migraine sufferers who say that acupuncture really helped them, and it’s an accepted treatment for pain relief.

A migraine is so much more than just a headache. If you regularly suffer from migraines, it’s worth trying these remedies to see if you can solve your problem. Good luck!
