When I talk of the magic of magnesium, I don’t mean the sleight-of-hand tricks of the stage conjurer. I’m talking about real magic, the kind that the goddess of the sea performs every single second of every single day and night in her submarine laboratory.
As a shaman, I have journeyed into the heart of this great mother of life, and from that I’ve learnt that she brings the power of alchemical fire in the salt water that floods through our every cell, giving us the energy and strength to magnetise good health and fortune towards us and through that empowerment, the magnaminity of will to help others.
The key to this great magical power is buried in our language:
The root word ‘maeg’ in the ancient Anglo-Saxon tongue meant ‘power’. The ancestors of Anglo-Saxons were the Scythians from the Caucusus mountain region where, it was told, three Magi, (wise and powerful mages) had been among the first to make a pilgrimage to the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. Mary Magdalene sang in her Magnificat “my soul doth magnify the Lord” and the Romans worshipped the goddess Magna Mata, the Great Mother of the Sea.
In fact, magnesium is so essential to the success of all life that it’s the fourth-most common element on the Earth. However, our agricultural soils of today have become largely depleted of minerals through the over-use of organo-phosphates in fertilisers and pesticides. So unless you live near the coast and eat a lot of sea vegetables, or are sowing organic seeds on soil that has never been chemically stripped of its nutrients, you’re almost certainly going to want to supplement your diet with magnesium and probably to a greater extent than that recommended by health professionals.
The official Recommended Daily Allowance of magnesium for adults is between 300 and 420 mgs a day, but I think this is the very minimum you’d need to just get by. On top of that, those levels may be well below those required for people who are burning fat for fuel, instead of carbs, on the Ketogenic Diet – also known as the Paleo or Caveman Diet because its grain-free regime is closer to what our earliest ancestors ate.
I follow that way of eating and I find I need closer to 800-1,000 mgs of magnesium a day. (I’m not aware that any scientific studies have been carried out on why – or even whether – fat-burners need more magnesium than carb-burners, but I think it may have something to do with the fire, the burning properties of the magnesium. Of course, I may be wrong, so please take this last with a pinch of seasalt!)
Anyway, latest studies show that, in the United States, only around 25 per cent of people get enough magnesium, while 55 per cent receive less than the Recommended Daily Allowance of magnesium, and a further 20 per cent significantly less.
How can you tell which percentile you fall into? Well, you may be deficient in magnesium if you have any of the following symptoms or conditions:
In her book The Magnesium Miracle, Dr Carolyn Dean M.D., N.D. says that she believes getting enough magnesium through foods alone is difficult, stating:
“I’m convinced that to get enough magnesium today, you need to take supplements.”
However, supplementing with magnesium is easy – it’s getting the right kind and in high enough doses that produces the challenge.
